The Alexander Sheridan series follows a British military officer through the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1858. V.A. Stuart drew on her own military background — she served as a captain in the Australian Women’s Auxiliary Service during World War II — to write seven novels covering the major events of the rebellion.
The series moves from the initial mutiny through the Massacre at Cawnpore, the siege and relief of Lucknow, and the cavalry campaigns that followed. Several books were published under alternate titles for different national markets, a common practice in mid-twentieth-century military fiction.
