Alex Gilvarry has published two standalone novels that each take a different angle on American identity. From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant (2012) is a satirical novel about a Filipino designer caught up in the War on Terror, and Eastman Was Here (2017) follows a literary journalist on a misguided trip to Vietnam.
Both books use humor and sharp observation to examine their protagonists’ place in American culture. Though unrelated in plot, they share Gilvarry’s interest in characters who find themselves out of step with the world around them.
