Agustina Bazterrica’s standalone novels deal with uncomfortable questions about what people will accept when institutions normalize violence. Tender Is the Flesh, her debut novel translated into English, gained a cult following for its premise alone, but the book works because of its restrained, matter-of-fact tone. The horror comes not from graphic scenes but from how ordinary everything feels to the characters living inside the system.
The Unworthy, her second novel, shifts setting but keeps that same interest in power structures and the people trapped within them. Both books have been translated from Spanish and have found large audiences outside Argentina.
