Age of X is Richelle Mead’s move away from vampires and into science fiction. Set in a future version of North America called the RUNA (Republic of United North America), the series imagines a world that has banned most organized religion after a catastrophic event. Justin March, a disgraced investigator, is recalled from exile to look into a series of mysterious deaths that suggest forbidden religious practices are making a comeback.
Gameboard of the Gods (2013) and The Immortal Crown (2014) build a complex world where genetic engineering is common, social castes are rigid, and ancient gods may be reasserting their influence. The books combine detective work with mythology and political intrigue, offering a different flavor from Mead’s paranormal romance work.
