Adrian Mole first appeared in 1982 as a thirteen-year-old English schoolboy keeping a diary full of self-important observations about his parents, his love life, and the state of the world. Sue Townsend followed him for nearly three decades, through adolescence, failed romances, fatherhood, and prostate trouble. The series is funny, often painfully so, because Adrian never stops believing he is misunderstood and destined for greatness.
The early books became massive bestsellers in the UK and were translated into dozens of languages. Later entries like Adrian Mole and the Weapons of Mass Destruction (2004) kept the formula fresh by placing Adrian’s personal complaints against the backdrop of real events. The Prostrate Years (2009) was the final entry, published five years before Townsend’s death.
