This series collects short fiction by Adam Mars-Jones, a British writer and critic, along with one volume co-authored with Edmund White. Lantern Lecture and Other Stories (1981) and Fabrications (1981) are Mars-Jones’s solo collections. Monopolies of Loss (1992) is also a solo Mars-Jones book that continues to address themes of illness and sexuality.
The Darker Proof (1988) is the collaborative volume, in which White and Mars-Jones each contributed stories about the AIDS crisis. Published when the epidemic was still devastating gay communities on both sides of the Atlantic, the book was one of the first literary fiction collections to confront AIDS head-on. The two writers bring different styles to the subject, with Mars-Jones’s tone more detached and White’s more personal.
