Adam Johnson’s two short story collections bookend his novel-writing career. Emporium (2002), his debut publication, established his voice with stories set in the American heartland. Fortune Smiles (2015) arrived after The Orphan Master’s Son and won the National Book Award for Fiction, making Johnson one of few authors to win both the Pulitzer and the National Book Award.
Fortune Smiles contains six stories that range across the globe, from a story about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to one set in North Korea. The collection shows Johnson working at the peak of his abilities in the short form.
