Abi Dare’s two novels follow Adunni, a young Nigerian girl fighting for her education and her voice. The Girl with the Louding Voice (2020) begins with Adunni in her rural village, where she is forced into marriage at fourteen. After escaping, she becomes a maid for a wealthy family in Lagos. The novel is written in Adunni’s distinctive first-person voice, with broken English that gives the prose its energy and personality. It became a New York Times bestseller and was translated into more than 24 languages.
And So I Roar (2024) picks up directly where the first book left off. Adunni is about to start boarding school on a scholarship when men from her home village arrive, accusing her of murder and demanding she return for judgment. The sequel won the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize and continues to explore the real barriers that girls in Nigeria face when trying to get an education.
