You Are Not Going Back is a personal essay by Abi Dare, originally published in the 2021 anthology Of This Our Country. That collection brought together 24 Nigerian writers to reflect on what it means to be Nigerian, covering the cultures, traditions, and contradictions that make up their identities. Dare’s essay draws on her own experience of growing up in Lagos and later moving to England.
The essay sits alongside her fiction as a more direct, autobiographical piece of writing. Where The Girl with the Louding Voice uses Adunni’s fictional voice to address issues of education and gender in Nigeria, You Are Not Going Back does so in Dare’s own words, grounded in her personal history of leaving home.
