The Abe Lieberman series by Stuart M. Kaminsky follows a veteran Jewish detective working the streets of Chicago. Lieberman, nicknamed “Rabbi” by his colleagues, is a seasoned cop whose cases take him through the city’s diverse neighborhoods, from the Jewish community on the North Side to Latino, African American, and Eastern European sections of the city. His partner, Bill Hanrahan, nicknamed “Father Murph,” provides a Catholic Irish counterpoint to Lieberman’s Jewish perspective.
Family life features prominently in the books. Lieberman deals with his aging parents, his daughter’s troubled marriage, and his own weariness after decades on the force. Kaminsky balances the mystery plots with domestic scenes that give Lieberman a fuller life than many fictional detectives. The series ran for ten novels between 1991 and 2007.
