The series begins when a soldier from the Macedonian wars of Alexander the Great finds himself transported to a fractured Earth where different eras of history exist side by side. From there, Baxter and Clarke expand the scope to include solar catastrophe and humanity’s struggle to survive against forces that operate on a cosmic scale.
Clarke brought the philosophical sweep and the sense of vast, alien intelligence that defined his Space Odyssey work. Baxter brought the hard physics and the attention to real science. Together the books have a quality that neither author produced alone, mixing big ideas with human-scale characters caught in events they can barely comprehend.
