The Gideon Johann Western series by Duane Boehm is his longest-running series, following former Confederate soldier Gideon Johann through the rough years of the post-Civil War American frontier. The series begins with Last Stand (2014), where Gideon is trying to put the war behind him and start fresh in the West. What follows is a nine-book saga of gunfights, cattle drives, loyalty, and survival.
The first seven books use the “Last” naming pattern (Last Stand, Last Chance, Last Hope, and so on), giving the series a sense of a man continually pushed to his limits. The final two books, Gideon Johann and Wayward Brother, shift focus slightly to explore the character’s origins and family ties. Throughout the series, Boehm writes action scenes with a matter-of-fact style that keeps the pace moving while also spending time on the quieter moments of frontier life.
This is the series that established Boehm’s reputation among Western fiction readers. Fans who enjoy it should also check out his Wild Horse Westerns and The Hand Of Westerns for more of his frontier stories.
