The Dixie Hemingway mystery series is set on Siesta Key, a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota, Florida. Dixie is a former sheriff’s deputy who left the force after a devastating personal loss. She now works as a pet sitter, making rounds to feed, walk, and care for animals while their owners are away. The job is supposed to be low-stress. It isn’t.
Each book finds Dixie tripping over a dead body or landing in the middle of a dangerous situation while on her pet-sitting rounds. The mysteries are woven into the daily rhythm of her life — feeding cats at dawn, walking dogs at sunset, and occasionally finding a client’s house turned into a crime scene. The Florida setting gives the series its color, with Siesta Key’s mix of wealthy snowbirds, local eccentrics, and Gulf Coast atmosphere.
Blaize Clement wrote the first seven books before her death in 2011. Her son John Clement continued the series, writing the final four installments based on notes and outlines she left behind.
