The A Dickens of a Crime series by Heather Redmond puts a young Charles Dickens in the role of amateur detective. Set in 1830s London, the books follow Dickens during his early days as a journalist, before he became the famous novelist. When murders occur in his orbit, he cannot help but investigate, often with the help of his future wife, Catherine Hogarth.
With five books published between 2018 and 2022, the series mixes historical detail with mystery plotting. Redmond clearly knows her Dickens history, and the novels are filled with period-accurate settings and references to the real people in Dickens’s life. The title of each book is a pun on one of Dickens’s own works, which gives the series a playful tone even as it deals with serious crimes.
