Sophie Foster has spent her whole life feeling out of place. She can hear other people’s thoughts, skipped several grades in school, and never quite fit in with the humans around her. Everything changes when a boy named Fitz reveals that she is actually an elf and brings her to the Lost Cities, a hidden world of elven civilization. From that point on, Sophie has to figure out where she came from, why her past was hidden, and what role she plays in the growing conflict between the elven authorities and a rebel group called the Neverseen.
What makes Sophie interesting as a character is that she is constantly caught between worlds. She misses her human family but belongs to the elven one. She has abilities that mark her as special, but those same abilities make her a target. Over the course of the series, she grows from a scared kid trying to fit in to someone willing to fight for what she believes in, even when the people in charge disagree with her.
