River grew up in New Eden, a hidden community of wolf shifters tucked away in the Colorado mountains. Life there is isolated and governed by strict rules, and River knows little about the outside world. That changes when she rescues Jonathan McKnight, a military veteran who was about to be executed, and brings him into her community.
Jonathan’s presence in New Eden creates problems. The community does not trust outsiders, and River’s decision to save him puts her at odds with the people she has known her whole life. River is protective and determined, the kind of person who acts on instinct and deals with the fallout later. Her loyalty to Jonathan forces her to question the rules she was raised with.
Charlotte Abel set the Sanctuary series in a closed world with its own politics and dangers, and River is at the center of it all. The story follows her as she tries to protect someone the rest of her community wants gone, while figuring out what she actually believes about the world outside New Eden.
