PJ Norris is a dragon shifter who flunked out of university, which is not the most promising start for a hero. Rather than wallowing in failure, he’s handed a quest: travel across a post-war world and find other dragon shifters. He sets out with his best friend Grant and a magical amulet, and what begins as a search mission quickly turns into something more tangled.
The Firewing Investigations series blends cozy fantasy with cozy mystery. PJ and Grant stumble into local problems everywhere they go, solving small-scale mysteries while chasing leads on other shifters. The tone stays light even when the stakes rise. PJ is not a warrior or a chosen one. He’s a guy who couldn’t hack it in school, traveling with his buddy, trying to figure things out as he goes.
S. Usher Evans set the series in the same world as The Weary Dragon Inn and Pobyd Perfections Bakery, giving readers who already know that setting familiar landmarks and lore. For new readers, the books work fine on their own. All three novels came out in 2025, each titled “PJ Norris and…” followed by whatever mess he’s gotten himself into this time.
