Neythan was raised in the Shedaím Brotherhood, trained from childhood to be an assassin in service to what he believed was a higher calling. The brotherhood presents itself as an instrument of divine will, carrying out necessary deaths to maintain balance and serve the remnants of ancient divine purpose. Neythan accepted this worldview completely until a failed assassination exposes contradictions in the brotherhood’s teachings and forces him to confront uncomfortable questions about his order’s true origins and motives.
The discovery that his entire understanding of history might be wrong puts Neythan in immediate danger. The Shedaím don’t tolerate questions or doubt, and those who learn too much about the brotherhood’s secrets rarely survive. As he uncovers evidence about the true nature of the lost gods and the events that shaped his world, Neythan must decide whether to protect the lies he was raised with or pursue a truth that could destroy everything he knows. His skills as an assassin keep him alive, but they can’t answer the deeper questions about purpose and faith.
The series uses Neythan’s journey to explore how religious and political authority use history to maintain control. The world he inhabits is one where gods once existed but disappeared, leaving only fragments of their presence and competing interpretations of what they wanted. Through two books, Neythan moves from unquestioning faith to dangerous knowledge, from instrument of the brotherhood to someone who must choose his own path based on incomplete and troubling truths.
