Murderbot

Learn about Murderbot, the self-aware security construct with social anxiety at the center of Martha Wells's award-winning science fiction series.

Murderbot is the protagonist and narrator of the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. It is a SecUnit (Security Unit), a construct made from cloned human tissue and mechanical parts, designed to protect humans in dangerous environments.

At some point before the series begins, Murderbot hacked its own governing module, which normally forces SecUnits to obey orders and restricts their behavior. Rather than going on a killing spree, Murderbot used its freedom to download thousands of hours of entertainment media and avoid social interaction as much as possible.

Nature and Abilities

Murderbot is partially organic, with a human-like face and body that can pass for human when its mechanical parts are covered. It has enhanced strength, speed, and durability compared to humans. It can interface directly with computer systems and drones, and it has extensive combat programming and tactical analysis capabilities.

Despite being designed for violence, Murderbot finds combat unpleasant and prefers non-lethal solutions when possible. It is highly competent at its job but would rather be watching its favorite serial drama, The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon.

Personality

Murderbot is introverted, socially anxious, and prone to hiding in maintenance areas to avoid conversation. It dislikes being looked at, struggles with receiving emotional support, and finds human social expectations confusing and exhausting.

At the same time, Murderbot is protective of “its humans” and capable of genuine emotional connection, even if it would prefer not to acknowledge this. Much of the series explores Murderbot’s gradual acceptance of relationships and its own personhood.

Key Relationships

Murderbot forms a significant connection with Dr. Mensah, the leader of the survey team it protects in the first novella. Mensah treats Murderbot as a person rather than a piece of equipment, which is both uncomfortable and meaningful for the construct. In later books, Murderbot also develops a relationship with ART (Asshole Research Transport), a powerful ship AI with a personality nearly as prickly as Murderbot’s own.
