Michaela “Mike” Caine is an FBI special agent assigned to the New York field office. She goes by Mike, and nobody who wants to stay on her good side calls her Michaela. She comes from a family with roots in law enforcement and earned her spot at the Bureau through competence rather than connections.
In The Final Cut, she is assigned as Nicholas Drummond’s partner when the British agent transfers to the FBI. The pairing works because their approaches differ. Mike is direct, action-oriented, and trusts her gut. Drummond is more deliberate and analytical. Their contrasting styles make them effective together, and their professional relationship deepens over the course of six books.
Mike handles the physical demands of the job without complaint and has a stubborn streak that keeps her going when cases turn dangerous. She is as comfortable in a firefight as she is running down leads, and the series gives her equal weight as a protagonist rather than treating her as a sidekick.
