Frodo Baggins inherits a ring from his uncle Bilbo. It seems like a small thing, a magic trinket that makes its wearer invisible. Then Gandalf the wizard explains what it really is: the One Ring, forged by Sauron to dominate all other rings of power. If Sauron reclaims it, Middle-earth falls. The only way to destroy it is to carry it into Mordor and throw it into the fires of Mount Doom.
Frodo volunteers for this task, though he has no idea what it will cost him. He’s not a warrior. He can’t fight the armies of Mordor or defeat the Ringwraiths hunting him. What he has is stubbornness, decency, and Samwise Gamgee, his gardener and the most loyal friend in literature.
The Ring corrupts everyone who carries it. Frodo feels its weight growing throughout the journey, its whispers becoming harder to resist. By the end, he’s hollowed out by the burden. Tolkien, a World War I veteran, understood that some wounds don’t heal. Frodo saves the world and can never enjoy it again.
Elijah Wood played Frodo in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy. The movies capture his physical journey while struggling to convey the internal battle that defines the character. The books remain the best way to understand what the Ring costs its bearer.
Frodo appears in The Lord of the Rings and briefly at the end of The Return of the King, where he sails into the West, seeking healing he cannot find in Middle-earth.
