Claire Calderwood grew up on a small island off the coast of Maine, and she left for good reason. But when a murder case echoes an unsolved crime from her youth, she goes back. Dea Poirier introduced Claire in Next Girl to Die (2019), and the character’s personal connection to the island gives the mystery more weight than a standard whodunit.
Claire knows the people on the island, and they know her. That familiarity cuts both ways. It helps her get information that an outsider never could, but it also means every revelation hits closer to home. In Beneath the Ashes (2019), Claire stays on the island as more dark secrets come to light, and the cost of digging into the past becomes harder to ignore.
Poirier writes Claire as someone caught between her professional obligations and her personal history. The isolated island setting traps her with the people she is investigating, and that pressure is what makes the character work.
