Alexander Sheridan is a British military officer serving in India when the Sepoy Rebellion breaks out in 1857. V.A. Stuart introduced him in Like Victors and Lords (1964) and followed him through seven novels covering the major events of the Indian Mutiny.
The series moves through the conflict’s worst moments: the initial mutiny, the Massacre at Cawnpore, the siege of the garrison, and the prolonged struggle for Lucknow. Stuart brought her own military experience to the writing โ she had served as a captain in the Australian Women’s Auxiliary Service during World War II, including service with the British XIV Army in Burma. The Indian Mutiny novels share the same mid-Victorian setting as her Phillip Hazard naval series, and the two series overlap during the final phase of the conflict.
Several books in the series were published under alternate titles for different national markets.
