William Gibson changed science fiction with Neuromancer in 1984. The novel, which won the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick awards, introduced a vision of networked computer culture, corporate power, and digital consciousness that anticipated much of what the internet would become. Along with the rest of the Sprawl trilogy (Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive), it defined the cyberpunk movement and influenced everything from film to video games to actual technology development.

Gibson’s later work moved away from far-future settings toward the present day. The Bridge trilogy (Virtual Light, Idoru, All Tomorrow’s Parties) is set in a near-future California, while the Blue Ant trilogy (Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, Zero History) takes place in a recognizable contemporary world where brands, surveillance, and hidden networks create their own kind of science fiction. The Peripheral (2014) and Agency (2020) returned to speculative territory, imagining alternate timelines connected through mysterious technology and adapted into a television series.

Beyond his novels, Gibson has written screenplays, graphic novels, essays, and short fiction. His story collection Burning Chrome (1986) contains many of his most influential short works. He also wrote an unproduced screenplay for Alien 3, later published as a book in 2021. Gibson’s influence on science fiction and popular culture extends far beyond his bibliography.
