W. Michael Gear is an American author whose fiction draws heavily on his background in anthropology and archaeology. His most extensive work is the First North Americans series, co-written with his wife Kathleen O’Neal Gear, which spans twenty-nine books imagining the lives of prehistoric peoples across the North American continent. The series, starting with People of the Wolf in 1990, combines archaeological knowledge with adventure storytelling.

Gear also writes science fiction, most notably the Donovan series about a deadly colony planet, and historical fiction including the Contact trilogy about the Spanish exploration of North America and the Saga of the Mountain Saga set in the early American fur trade era. He has published nearly ninety books across several genres since the late 1980s. His work is marked by detailed research and a willingness to tackle large-scale stories that cover thousands of years of human history.
