Vince Flynn created Mitch Rapp after 60 publishers rejected his first manuscript. He eventually self-published Term Limits in 1997, hand-selling copies from the trunk of his car until a major publisher took notice. Transfer of Power followed in 1999, introducing CIA operative Mitch Rapp to readers who would make him a phenomenon.
Flynn drew on his background as a consultant to the government and his own extensive research to write thrillers that felt authentic. His books tackled terrorism, political corruption, and the moral complexities of intelligence work years before these topics dominated headlines. After 9/11, his earlier novels seemed almost prophetic, and his readership grew substantially.
The Mitch Rapp series follows a counter-terrorism operative who operates outside normal channels. Rapp is willing to do what politicians won’t authorize publicly, making him controversial within his own government and lethal to America’s enemies. The character became a touchstone for the political thriller genre, influencing countless imitators.
Flynn wrote 14 Mitch Rapp novels before his death from prostate cancer in 2013 at age 47. Before he died, he selected Kyle Mills to continue the series. Mills has since written multiple Rapp novels, working from notes and guidance Flynn left behind. The character Vince Flynn created continues to appear in bestselling thrillers, maintaining the hard-edged authenticity that defined the original books.
