The Varg Veum series is a long-running Norwegian crime fiction series created by Gunnar Staalesen, set in Bergen and featuring private investigator Varg Veum. The series began in 1977 and has continued across several decades, making it one of the foundational works of Nordic noir before the genre became internationally prominent.
Staalesen draws on the geography of Bergen extensively, with the city’s distinctive landscape of fjords, hills, and close-knit neighborhoods serving as an integral part of the atmosphere. Varg Veum operates as an independent investigator, frequently clashing with official institutions while navigating cases rooted in family secrets, social inequality, and the darker currents beneath Norway’s welfare state.
The series has been adapted for Norwegian television and film, with Trond Espen Seim playing Veum in a popular film series. English translations of the books have expanded the readership internationally, though many of the earlier entries took years to become widely available outside Scandinavia.
