Valerie Anand was born in 1937 and grew up in Kent and Surrey. She became interested in historical fiction as a teenager after seeing the film Ivanhoe, which sparked a lifelong fascination with medieval England. Before turning to fiction full-time, she worked as a secretary and trade journalist.
Under her own name, Anand wrote the Norman Quartet, a four-book saga covering the Norman Conquest through four generations of an English family. She also wrote the Bridges Over Time series, which follows one family across nine centuries, and the Exmoor Saga, set in the West Country during the Tudor period.
Under the pen name Fiona Buckley, she wrote the Ursula Blanchard mystery series, her most popular work. Set during the reign of Elizabeth I, the 23-book series follows a lady-in-waiting to the queen who solves murders and uncovers plots against the Crown. Anand continued writing into her eighties and died in January 2024.
