Tyrell Johnson is originally from Bellingham, Washington, and now lives in Kelowna, British Columbia. His debut novel The Wolves of Winter (2018) was an Indie Next pick praised by Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, and others. It follows a young woman surviving alone in the Yukon after a pandemic and nuclear war, in a story that combines survival thriller with the kind of character study Johnson does best.
The Lost Kings (2022) is a complete departure in genre. It is a psychological crime thriller about 12-year-old Jeanie King, who one night finds her father covered in blood — and then watches him disappear. The novel alternates between Jeanie’s childhood and her adult self reckoning with what she witnessed. The New York Times named it one of the best crime novels of 2022.
Johnson’s two novels show a writer comfortable across genres, with a consistent interest in characters under pressure and the long shadow of traumatic events. Both are good entry points depending on whether survival fiction or crime thriller is more appealing.
