Tui T. Sutherland was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and grew up between Florida and several other states. She studied at Williams College in Massachusetts and later moved to the Boston area. She began her publishing career in 2000 with picture books and early readers, including Jewel Sticker Stories and several Muppets tie-ins. Her early work covered a wide range of licensed properties and original children’s stories before she found her signature subject: dragons.
The Wings of Fire series launched in 2012 with The Dragonet Prophecy and quickly became one of the best-selling middle grade fantasy series in the United States. Set on the dragon continents of Pyrrhia and Pantala, the series follows different dragon protagonists across five story arcs, with each five-book arc centered on a new group of dragonets. The main series now runs to nineteen books, supported by the Legends standalones, Winglets novellas, graphic novel adaptations illustrated by Mike Holmes and Barry Deutsch, and companion guides. Beyond Wings of Fire, Sutherland wrote the Avatars trilogy for young adults, the Menagerie middle grade series with her husband, the Pet Trouble chapter books, and several volumes in the multi-author Spirit Animals series. She contributed to the Pirates of the Caribbean novelization line and the collaborative Erin Hunter animal fantasy brand. She lives outside Boston.
