Truman Smith is a pen name used by Bill Crider for a series of private investigator mysteries set on Galveston Island, Texas. Bill Crider (1941-2018) was a prolific Texas mystery author who wrote more than seventy novels across several series, including the Sheriff Dan Rhodes mysteries and the Carl Burns academic mysteries. The Truman Smith Private Eye series shares its name with its protagonist, a laid-back PI working out of Galveston.
The five Truman Smith books were published between 1991 and 1997. They follow Truman Smith as he takes on cases in and around Galveston, a coastal Texas city with a colorful history. The books have the wry humor and Texas atmosphere that characterized much of Crider’s work across all his series.
