Tony Riches is a Welsh author who writes historical fiction about the Tudor period in English history. He lives in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and his Welsh background has a direct connection to his subject matter, since the Tudor dynasty itself had Welsh roots. His first published work was Queen Sacrifice in 2012, a thriller set in the world of professional chess, but he found his stride with historical fiction starting with the Warwick novel in 2014.

The Tudor Trilogy, beginning with Owen in 2015, is his best-known work. The three novels trace the Welsh origins of the Tudor dynasty through Owen Tudor, his son Jasper Tudor, and his grandson Henry VII. Riches draws on years of research into primary sources, and he has written about the challenges of turning fragmentary historical records into full narratives. The Brandon Trilogy shifts focus to the court of Henry VIII, centering on Charles Brandon and his relationship with the king’s sister Mary. His most recent series, The Elizabethan, takes a different approach by devoting each novel to a separate figure from Elizabeth I’s court, including Francis Drake, the Earl of Essex, and Sir Walter Raleigh.
