Tony Maxwell was born and educated in South Africa. After a stint in the army, he traveled widely through Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. He lived in Australia for twelve years before settling in Canada, where he now resides.
Maxwell’s writing career began with non-fiction. Searching for the Queen’s Cowboys grew out of trips to South Africa while filming a documentary about Strathcona’s Horse, a Canadian regiment that served in the Anglo-Boer War. Pacific War Ghosts followed, documenting his journeys to World War II battlefields across the South Pacific with over 100 photographs of wrecked aircraft, tanks, and guns. His fiction includes the historical duology The Young Lions and The Brave Men, set in South Africa from the gold rush through the Great War, and the African Adventure series, which tackles wildlife crime and conservation in modern-day Africa.
