Tom Phelan grew up on a small farm in Mountmellick, County Laois, Ireland. He did not publish his first novel until he was nearly fifty, when In the Season of the Daisies was accepted by the Lilliput Press in Dublin. That book, set against the backdrop of a 1921 IRA incident, was selected for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers series.

Since then, Phelan has written five more novels and a memoir. His fiction deals with themes drawn from Irish history and rural life, including the effects of war, emigration, religious institutions, and long-held local tensions. We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It (2019) is a memoir of his boyhood in Laois. He now lives in New York.
