Timothy Jay Smith draws on decades of international travel and work experience for his fiction. His debut novel Cooper’s Promise (2012) was followed by A Vision of Angels (2013), which dealt with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both books established his pattern of setting stories in politically tense regions and weaving personal relationships into larger geopolitical situations.
The Fourth Courier (2019) is a Cold War-era thriller set in Poland, dealing with nuclear smuggling in the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse. Fire on the Island (2020) takes place on a Greek island during the refugee crisis, mixing a love story with the tension of a community divided by the arrival of migrants. Istanbul Crossing (2024) returns to Turkey, a setting Smith knows well from years spent in the country. His novels have won recognition including the Paris Prize for Fiction, and several have been praised for their treatment of LGBTQ+ characters in international settings.
