Thrity Umrigar is an Indian-American author and journalist born in Mumbai, India. She moved to the United States at age 21 and is a longtime professor of English at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Her fiction frequently explores the lives of Indian and Indian-American characters, examining class, gender, immigration, and the tensions between tradition and modern life.
Her debut novel Bombay Time (2001, though some editions list 1990) introduced the themes she would return to throughout her career: the complexities of life in Mumbai and the ways that social class shapes relationships. The Space Between Us (2006) became her breakthrough, telling the story of Bhima, a domestic servant, and Sera, her upper-middle-class employer. That book’s sequel, The Secrets Between Us (2018), continued Bhima’s story and was also well received.
Umrigar has written across several forms. Her memoir First Darling of the Morning (2004) recounts her childhood in India, and she has published three children’s picture books, including Binny’s Diwali and Sugar in Milk (both 2020). Her 2022 novel Honor, which deals with an honor killing in a small Indian village, was selected for Oprah’s Book Club. Her most recent novels include The Museum of Failures (2023) and Missing Sam (2026).
