Thomas Wolfe was born in 1900 in Asheville, North Carolina, and died young at 37 from complications following a bout of pneumonia. In that short span he produced four sprawling novels and a large body of short fiction, much of it published posthumously with the help of his editor Maxwell Perkins. His work had a demonstrable influence on writers including Jack Kerouac, Ray Bradbury, and Philip Roth.

His novels are deeply autobiographical. Look Homeward, Angel drew so directly from life in Asheville that its publication caused considerable upset among people who recognized themselves in its pages. Of Time and the River picks up Eugene Gant’s story at Harvard and in New York, covering Wolfe’s own experiences as a teacher and aspiring writer. The posthumous novels The Web and the Rock and You Can’t Go Home Again return to many of the same themes under a new protagonist, George Webber.

His connection to the Akashic Noir anthology series in this catalog reflects how widely his name appears in the publishing world as a shared author credit — the Akashic Noir series is a long-running anthology imprint, not fiction by Thomas Wolfe the novelist.
