Theodore Sturgeon was one of the most respected science fiction writers of the mid-20th century, known for bringing emotional depth and genuine literary ambition to a genre often dismissed as pulp. His best work — stories like “More Than Human,” “A Saucer of Loneliness,” and “Killdozer!” — dealt with loneliness, belonging, and what it means to be human, subjects that gave his science fiction unusual weight.

He wrote prolifically for the science fiction magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, including Galaxy and Astounding Science Fiction, and his influence on other writers was significant. His name lives on in “Sturgeon’s Law,” his sardonic observation that “ninety percent of everything is crud” — a remark that was, characteristically, also about his own field.

The 13-volume Complete Stories series, published by North Atlantic Books with introductions from writers including Kurt Vonnegut, Harlan Ellison, and Jonathan Lethem, represents the most complete gathering of his short fiction and is the standard reference for his work in the form.
