Terry Harknett (1936-2019) was a British author who wrote nearly 200 books, mostly westerns and crime novels, under a long list of pseudonyms. He was part of a group of British western writers sometimes called the “Piccadilly Cowboys” — London-based authors who wrote American westerns for paperback publishers in the 1970s and 1980s.
His most famous creation was the Edge series, written as George G. Gilman, which ran 61 installments and was marketed as “The Most Violent Westerns in Print.” Under his own name, Harknett wrote the Steve Wayne crime novels, the Crown spy thrillers, and the Fortune series, along with standalone novels and two travel non-fiction books about the Balearic Islands and the Caribbean.
The Apache series, written as William M. James, was another of his major works, running 27 books from 1974 to 1984. The series idea came from Laurence James, and Harknett shared writing duties on the early entries before taking over. His output was staggering by any measure, and his westerns remain popular with collectors of vintage paperback fiction.
