Tania James is an Indian-American author whose novels and short stories draw on South Asian history and the immigrant experience. Her debut novel Atlas of Unknowns (2009) follows two sisters in Kerala whose lives diverge when one moves to New York. The Tusk That Did the Damage (2015) weaves together three narrators, including a rogue elephant, in a story about poaching in southern India.
Her most recent novel Loot (2023) is set in 18th-century India and France and follows a young woodcarver caught up in the plundering of Tipu Sultan’s palace. James has also published the story collection Aerogrammes and the novella Lion and Panther in London. She teaches creative writing and has received fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the National Endowment for the Arts.
