T.R. Simon is best known for the Zora and Me trilogy, a series of middle-grade novels that imagines the childhood of Zora Neale Hurston in Eatonville, Florida. The first book, co-written with Victoria Bond, won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent and was nominated for an Edgar Award. Simon went on to write two sequels, The Cursed Ground and The Summoner, completing the trilogy in 2020.
Outside the Zora and Me series, Simon co-wrote the picture book Oskar and the Eight Blessings (2015), illustrated by Mark Siegel. The story follows a young Jewish refugee arriving in New York City on the seventh night of Hanukkah in 1938, meeting eight kind strangers as he walks the length of Manhattan. It won the National Jewish Book Award for Children’s Literature.
