T.J. Brearton was born in 1975 in Bronxville, New York, and grew up partly in Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks and partly in Westchester County. He studied briefly at Bowling Green State University and the New York Film Academy, then spent years working in construction, carpentry, and bartending while writing. He wrote nine novels over a decade before Joffe Books published Habit in 2014, the first entry in the Titan series featuring Detective Brendan Healy.

The Titan series and North County books established his core Adirondack territory, with the Tom Lange series marking a deliberate departure to southwest Florida. Later series — Shannon Ames, The Roth Sisters — moved into FBI thriller territory while maintaining his focus on tight plotting and procedural credibility. His publishers have included Joffe Books, Bookouture, and Inkubator Books.

Her Perfect Secret won the Next Generation Independent Book Award for Best Suspense, and his catalog of more than thirty books across multiple series reflects a prolific career built largely through the digital crime fiction market.
