Sydney Bauer is the pen name of an Australian writer who chose the pseudonym from the TV show Alias and the character Jack Bauer from 24. Before turning to fiction, she worked as a crime, legal, and courts reporter for a major Australian newspaper, then moved into magazine editing and television. That background in real-world crime reporting shows up in her fiction, which is packed with courtroom procedure and legal maneuvering.
Her David Cavanaugh series launched in 2007 with Undertow and ran for six books through 2011. The debut won the Sisters in Crime Davitt Award for best crime novel by an Australian woman. Cavanaugh is a Boston defense attorney who gets pulled into cases that go well beyond the courtroom, mixing legal drama with thriller pacing. Bauer has also written children’s books, including A is for Axolotl and Adam and the Malamute’s Egg, both published in 2019.
