Susanna Gregory is the pen name of Elizabeth Cruwys, who was born in 1958 and educated at the University of Cambridge. Before turning to fiction, she worked as a coroner’s officer in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Social Medicine and conducted field research on high-altitude diseases in the Himalayas and diving diseases on high-altitude lakes. Her academic background in forensic medicine and her years living in Cambridge give her novels an unusual level of period and procedural detail.
Her debut novel, A Plague on Both Your Houses (1996), introduced Matthew Bartholomew, a physician and teacher at the fictional Michaelhouse college in 14th-century Cambridge. That series ran for 26 books and became her signature work, with Bartholomew solving murders amid the politics, plague, and academic rivalries of medieval England. She launched a second major series with A Conspiracy of Violence (2006), following Thomas Chaloner, an ex-spy working in Restoration London during the 1660s. Alongside these two long-running series, she has written the Sir Geoffrey Mappestone Crusades-era mysteries, the Alec Lonsdale Victorian detective novels, and several entries in the Medieval Murderers collaborative series.
