Susan Mihalic is an American author, editor, and writing instructor based in Taos, New Mexico. She holds a degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and spent decades in publishing before writing her first novel. In the 1980s she worked as an editor at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, and later served as an editor and curriculum writer for an educational software company.
Mihalic ran an art school in Taos where she produced hundreds of workshops in the literary and visual arts, and she founded No Coast Writers, a local read-and-critique group. Her years teaching therapeutic horseback riding directly informed the equestrian world in her debut novel.
Her first novel, Dark Horses (2021), follows a teenage equestrian prodigy dealing with abuse from her father and coach. The book received starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Library Journal, and was named one of O, The Oprah Magazine’s Most Anticipated Books of 2021. Publishers Weekly called it “a powerhouse.”
