Sunyi Dean made a strong impression with her 2022 debut, The Book Eaters. The novel imagines a hidden society of people who consume books for sustenance, and follows a mother trying to break free from her family’s control to save her son, whose appetite runs toward something much darker than paper and ink. The book was praised for its original premise and its willingness to get into uncomfortable territory around family, loyalty, and what parents will do for their children.
Dean has also published shorter works including The Thief of Memory and How To Cook and Eat the Rich, both of which show her interest in stories that take a familiar idea and push it somewhere unexpected. The Girl with a Thousand Faces is scheduled for 2026, continuing her career in speculative fiction. She splits her time between the UK and New Zealand, and her writing draws on both cultures.
