Stuart M. Kaminsky was a prolific American mystery novelist and professor of film who published over 60 novels across multiple detective series. Born in Chicago in 1934, he earned his doctorate from Northwestern University and taught film studies for decades, a background that fed directly into his fiction. His Toby Peters series features a 1940s Hollywood private eye who takes cases involving real movie stars, while his Porfiry Rostnikov series follows a Moscow police inspector through the final decades of the Soviet Union and into modern Russia.

Beyond his two best-known series, Kaminsky wrote the Abe Lieberman books about a Jewish Chicago detective, the Lew Fonesca series set in Sarasota, Florida, and tie-in novels for CSI: New York and The Rockford Files. He also wrote the original novelizations of the Kolchak: The Night Stalker TV movies. His non-fiction work includes biographies of Gary Cooper, John Huston, and Clint Eastwood, plus several books on film genres and television.

Kaminsky won the Edgar Award in 1989 and received multiple nominations from the Mystery Writers of America throughout his career. He was also recognized with the Prix du Roman d’Aventure in France. He died in 2009 in St. Louis, leaving behind one of the most varied bodies of work in American mystery fiction.
