Steven Brust is a fantasy and science fiction author best known for his long-running series about Vlad Taltos, an assassin and minor boss in the criminal organization known as the Jhereg. Brust’s work is characterized by its witty dialogue, complex world-building, and experimentation with narrative structure.
The Dragaera setting is unique in fantasy: a world dominated by Dragaerans, a near-immortal race divided into seventeen Great Houses, each with its own characteristics and animal totem. Humans (called “Easterners” by Dragaerans) are a marginalized minority, which Vlad uses to his advantage.
Brust is a member of the “Scribblies,” a writing group in Minneapolis that included other fantasy luminaries like Emma Bull and Will Shetterly.
