Stephen Wright is an American literary novelist who has published five novels over nearly four decades. His debut, Meditations in Green (1983), drew on his service in the Vietnam War to create a hallucinatory account of life in an Army intelligence unit. The book won praise for its experimental prose and refusal to tell a straightforward war story.
M31: A Family Romance (1988) moved into stranger territory, following a family who believe they have been contacted by aliens. Going Native (1994) traced a violent journey across America, and The Amalgamation Polka (2006) was set during the Civil War. After a fourteen-year gap, Processed Cheese (2020) returned to contemporary America with a satire of consumer culture and the way money distorts everything it touches. Wright publishes rarely, but each novel has been praised for its language and ambition.
