Stephen Mertz has been writing action-adventure fiction since the late 1970s, with more than 75 books to his name. His career took off with the M.I.A. Hunter series, published under the house name Jack Buchanan starting in 1985, which followed a team rescuing American prisoners of war from Southeast Asia. The series ran for 17 books and became a staple of 1980s men’s adventure paperbacks.

Mertz also wrote the Cody’s Army series (as Jim Case) about a covert military unit, and later revived the concept with Cody’s War starting in 2019. His Blaze! Western series, published in 2015-2017, shows his range across genres, while the Kilroy Mystery and Steve Madison Mysteries series demonstrate his crime fiction chops. His standalone novels cover everything from espionage (The Castro Directive) to a fictional account of Jimi Hendrix (Jimi After Dark). Mertz remains active, with new Nick Donahue and Cody’s War books appearing into the 2020s.
